Here's a newspaper article summing up Scott's performance last night: Scott Dohmann faced the best Omaha had to offer Monday night at Isotopes Park.

Dohmann, the Albuquerque closer, faced the top of the Royals order, which included a pair of former major leagues, in the top of the ninth inning, with a single run separating a pair of second-place teams in the Pacific Coast League.

After retiring the first two Royals, Dohmann allowed two base runners before recording the final out and preserving the 8-7 victory in the series opener.

With one out, Dohmann struck out Rick Ankiel on a foul tip. Ankiel, the former St. Louis Cardinal pitching phenom-turned-resurrected outfielder, is with Omaha on a Major League rehab assignment.

Scott threw 3 scoreless innings against the New Orleans Zephyrs last night. Not a bad performance in his home town! That makes 4 combined scoreless innings since he joined the Isotopes earlier this week.

Scott has been called to join the Albuquerque Isotopes, and here is a writeup from the New Orleans paper, the Examiner:

The Dodgers recalled Isotopes closer Jon Link to the majors on Sunday. He will replace reliever Russ Ortiz, who was designated for assignment. With Link gone, Wallach said Luis Ayala will hold down the closer's role. Link will be replaced on the roster by veteran right-hander Scott Dohmann, who had been held back in extended spring training in Arizona. “He’s had some time in the big leagues," Wallach said of Dohmann, who pitched for Colorado, Kansas City and Tampa Bay from 2004 to 2008. "I saw him in either ’04 or ’05 in the big leagues. I saw him a little bit in big-league camp (this spring). He’s got a fastball, slider, change or split. He’s a professional pitcher."

Scott has signed with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp, a professional baseball team in Japan's Central League (more info here).
I had a chance to offer a few questions that may give a little insight into what's going on since he has gotten there:

SDFanSite: So, Scott. What has been the biggest adjustment: Life in Japan or Baseball in Japan?

SCOTT: I would have to say the biggest adjustment thus far is the way of life in general. The food, the traditions, the regiment, and the culture. The people are extremely polite and non-confrontational as a whole. The food has been good for the most part (much to the thanks of the translators helping describe what some things are). The baseball drills and conditioning is a bit different but in a good way. I will say that there is some down time that we didn't have in the states. Over here we get done in 5 hrs what we could get done in 3 and a half in the states. The money is deceiving because it seems like play money. 10,000 "dollar bills"??? Come on! (10,000 yen really) Anyway, the short of it is that the adjustment and transition has been extremely smooth and so far very exciting.

SDFanSite: About the translator(s). Are you assigned one or a group? How much of your day is spent with a translator at your side?

SCOTT: There are three translators which we all share/use (Joe, Kimi, and Hiro). At the field, there pretty much is always one by our side. On our on time, they are available pretty much at the drop of a hat if we need them.

SDFanSite: You and Spring Training haven't gotten along very well in the past. How is this one shaping up? Does it feel like the usual Spring Training?

SCOTT: Being out here so early as compared to the states I believe has had some positive effects. I feel as though I am ahead of schedule of where I would be in the states for sure. Health, command, strength, and feel for my pitches all feel pretty good considering it is still February (yes, I'm a little behind in posting this). We'll see. I'm excited and ready to go.

I'll post more as Scott keeps us up to date.

Scranton/WB 8, Durham 7 (Scranton leads 1-0). Scott Dohmann blew a 1-run lead in the bottom of the 9th, allowing the winning run on a 2-out single...David Price worked 6 innings, but left trailing 4-2. He gave up 3 runs in the first inning, with the big blow being a 2-run home run. Price cruised through the middle innings before giving up one more run in the 6th. He was pulled after 6, striking out 9 and walking just 1...Elliot Johnson drove in 2 with a double in the 3rd...The Bulls rallied to take the lead with 5 in the 7th. Rashad Eldridge who was added just prior to the game, drove home 2 in the inning with a double.

Now here is the actual summary from the game:

Juan Miranda led off the ninth with a grounder down the first-base line that Chris Richard struggled with before picking up and throwing wildly to the covering Dohmann. The errant throw allowed Miranda to take second before Basak came on as a pinch-runner. That brought up Battle in the spot that normally would have been filled by Shelley Duncan, the same player who smacked the walk-off homer in Sunday's victory over Pawtucket.
After Ben Broussard walked and Matt Carson hit into a fielder's choice -- Durham shortstop Jorge Velandia had trouble with the ball and should have turned a double play -- Duncan lined one to right that hit just in front of Jon Weber. Duncan rounded first and received the obligatory mugging from his teammates but afterward deflected all the praise.

I guess it was just quicker and easier to blame it on Scott.

Wow..!
Just when I was wondering how long it would be before Scott throws again.... he comes into a tied game with runners on first and third.
He faced only one batter - Big Papi. Papi grounded into a double play to end the inning!
Haynes and Crawford sealed the win in the next inning, handing Scott his first 'W' of the season.
Congratulations to the Rays on the win and Scott for his first win.

It looks like Scott has secured the final spot in the bullpen.
Dare I say it again? - Scott has really never had a great preseason.
I would like to point out a few things:
1. His walks are down (which to me indicates that he is throwing more strikes), which also means he is likely to get hit more often.
2. In spite of more hits, he hasn't given up any HR's in preseason.
3. His strikeouts are impressive as usual (10 in 11.1 innings).

If he continues this pace, with walks down and throwing more strikes, he'll get back to his comfort zone soon.

I'm excited and ready for opening day.

The Rays took a beating from the Red Sox last night. The entire pitching staff got beat up, including the Red Sox.
I actually got to watch Scott throw last night, and he just didn't seem to have his stuff.
He looked like he was working harder than usual to get the ball to the catcher. Although I guess the same could apply to most of the pitchers who threw last night.
Ah well, a rough outing is expected every once in a while.

Time to get back up on the horse.

From the St. Petersburg Times:

"I think it takes being knocked down, and knocked down hard, and knowing what it takes to get back up again," said the 29-year-old Dohmann, who has allowed just one earned run in his past 15 appearances. "That's what this game is based on, failure. I think the experience factor is a big key, being comfortable in those situations when they arise."

I'm still amazed at the number of people on 'fan' forums for the Rays, who still don't give Scott respect. They are still waiting for him to fail.
As a reliever, the ability to keep your ERA down is important. It's also a tough role because you only pitch 1-3 innings. If you give up even one run, your ERA takes a blow. As a starter going at least 5 innings, you can afford to give up one earned run. So when a relief pitcher goes 15 innings without giving up an earned run, I don't think it's a fluke. Scott did it once before with the Colorado Rockies (not sure how many innings, but I think it was around 18?). Anyway.. it seems to be the same story every season.. Scott has a rough pre-season and then gets dumped in the minors. You would think that if the managers/coaches knew the players, they would also know their history. Ah well.
I support the Rays. I support the pitching staff. I don't complain about the other players because you never know when one of them will bail Scott out. It's happened quite a bit already (Aki, Upton, Young, Pena). They have all made spectacular plays in the field to back Scott.
Then, there are the other relievers... if they come in after Scott has left runners on base, I pull for them to keep those runners from scoring.
If all I did here was pull for Scott and pull against everyone else, how could I call myself a fan?
What good does it do to go on the forum and complain and belittle players? It only shows that you have a keyboard and internet connection and know how to hide behind them. Oh, and it probably does very little for the players who read the comments.

Ok. Enough.
I'm going drink a beer.

Despite giving up a homerun to the first batter he faced in the inning, Scott ensured that the remaining Oriole batters went quietly.
Scott surrendered 2 more hits outside of the homerun, but also caught a runner in a rundown trying to steal 2nd base.

All in all, the HR didn't hurt Scott's ERA much.

He also took a ball off of his throwing hand, via Kenny Lofton. Scott stayed in the game and I have not heard an injury report. I am suspecting that he is fine.

Scott got his first win tonight against the Blue Jays. He threw 1 inning, giving up 1 hit, struck out 1 , walked 2 and gave up 0 runs.

I do worry about the walks, hopefully he can get that under control before they come back to haunt him. He hasn't given up an earned run in his last 3 outings.

The bullpen tonight did a great job, holding the Jays to just 3 hits and 0 runs.

The Rays just couldn't get it together against the Orioles. A final score of 10-7 doesn't show the nice pitching that showed up in the middle relief area.

Salas and Glover each threw a scoreless inning behind Scott.

That aside, the Rays were unable to win a single game out of three in Baltimore.

I didn't get to watch any sports this weekend on t.v., because I spent the whole time in my bathroom. Why, you ask? Food poisoning? Too much guacamole? No.... remodeling.
I have become very accustomed to copper pipes, flux, solder, shims, blow-in insulation and when to call a plumber. Here are two of my very own tips for painting a room:
1. If your wall still looks like poo after 5 coats of paint - put a 6th coat.
2. You are much less accurate with a paint roller after drinking alcohol (even if it was just 2 Heinekens).
So if you stumbled across this page while searching the internet for tips for painting a room, I'm sorry.

Anyway, on to baseball -

If you were a Devil Ray pitcher anywhere within 2 square miles of Yankee Stadium for the Sunday game, things pretty much ended up badly for you. Except for Glover, who seemed to have some sort of immunity to the beating, the pitching staff really took it on the chin:

At least the Rays were able to take one game against the Yankees, which seemed to wake the sleeping giant.

It's a good sign that he hasn't walked anyone, and he appears to have his control back.

Unfortunately, we lost the first game 7-3.

I'm not able to catch the game ( I have to 'watch' on MLBGameday.com ), but I got to see Scott's inning. Kinda ran the spectrum: 2 hits, 1 HR, 1 K, 0 BBs. From what I could see, the HR pitch wasn't a bad pitch.. but it's a homer nonetheless.

Jackson threw six strong innings with 0 runs.

Final Score: Rays - 14 Yanks - 4
You have to feel pretty good about beating the Yankees. At home. By 10 runs.

Well, it looks like we get our shot. Scott has been called up today.
There seems to be some support, some people who are happy to see him up. But as always, there are some who just want to be negative:

In any case, he's done really well in Durham... including a new pitch. He had time to work on it.

Scott threw another scoreless inning last night, giving up one hit.
His ERA continues to deflate, down to 2.03.

Other stats: 1.03 WHIP
WHIP (also Baserunners-per-inning or Ratio): Walks + hits divided by the number of innings pitched. This is a traditional rotisserie scoring category. Less than 1.25 is considered very good and more than 1.50 is considered very bad. Values under 1.00 indicate that the pitcher has allowed fewer baserunners than innings pitched and are only achieved occasionally by elite MLB pitchers.

He also has thrown 48.2 innings, while striking out 48 batters.

Scott threw another great 2.0 innings last night, giving up 1 hit while striking out 2. I think he may have hit a batter, also? Hitting a batter once in a while is ok... it's similar to an animal marking it's territory because it leaves a mark, just without the foul smell.

Scott continues to excel over in Durham. He picked up his 4th win tonight, along with 4 K's.
At this point, he has been doing so well that I feel like a broken record. But that's a good thing. His ERA is a meager 2.45.

If he does any better, he'll be overqualified for the Devil Rays bullpen. (Kidding)

The following rant/opinion is straight from the keeper of this blog, and is not the opinion of Scott Dohmann.

I try not to lose my temper and say things here that may affect Scott and his position/reputation. I certainly don't want him caught in the middle of things posted here or burn any bridges... but I am a fan, and this is a fan site.

I have watched Scott start the season with the Rays. He had a less-than-stellar start, yes... but he has always had a rough preseason. He got sent down to AAA. Ok, that happens when players need improvement. However, I have watched everyone around Scott get pulled up from AAA. The final straw for me was watching them go TO A DIFFERENT TEAM to pull someone to the bullpen before Scott. I've seen zero support from 'fans'. DRays Bay = nope. The Devil Rays 'fan' forum = zero. What I do see is: (1) a lot of complaining about the players they have on the team. (2) Complaints about who they don't have on the team. (3) Complaints about players they wish they had on the team.
In spite of seeing Scott stay in AAA, we watch AND SUPPORT the Rays. Why? Because Scott is part of that organization! We support Scott and the team he plays for. Now I'm just tired of supporting an organization that doesn't want him.
It's no secret that the bullpen needs help.. so why not bring him up? I would think that everyone who came up before him to this point got called up because they were better fits for the team, but changes are still being made and Scott still sits in Durham. I find it hard to believe that statistics are involved, check his stats for yourself------------------------->

Here's a nice little article from the St. Petersburg Times:

BEING HIMSELF: Maddon praised his pitching staff, including RHP Scott Dohmann, a reliever candidate who had a rough start this spring.
Dohmann gave up Cleveland's only hit in Tampa Bay's 7-0 win, but he struck out two in 12/3 innings. The 29-year-old said the biggest change he has made is relaxing, "just letting it rip."
Earlier in camp, Dohmann said he focused too much on mechanical tweaks such as shortening his stride; it "got me too mental; I wasn't showing my personality."
Tuesday "was a step in the right direction," Dohmann said. "I'd rather start off slow in the spring than finish slow."

Scott is back on track after throwing 1.2 innings today. He gave up one hit, no runs, no walks, and 2 strikeouts!

Looks like the DRays have thrown together a few wins in the last few games. I hope they keep it up for the regular season.
